Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing form-fitting garments made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.
After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
The industry laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose impact on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
