This Academy Award-nominated actress Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran has died 89 years old.
The star, with filmography featured National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, died at her home in California’s Ojai. The news was shared via an announcement by her daughter, Academy Award-winning star Laura Dern.
Dern, who appeared with her mom in various films including Rambling Rose, referred to her as “my incredible hero as well as my precious gift of a mother”, noting that she was present as she died.
“She was the greatest mother, daughter, grandmother, performer, creative and caring individual that felt like a dream come true,” she stated. “We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”
Her initial acting years included small roles in TV shows including Perry Mason whereas that decade featured her performing with actor Jack Nicholson in the film Chinatown.
That very year, the year 1974, she appeared with Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s celebrated film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a classic. Her acting earned Ladd her initial Oscar nod as best supporting actress.
During the eighties, she starred in the thriller Black Widow, a suspense story as well as comedy sequel National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and appeared on Alice, a comedy program inspired by the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
In the subsequent decade, she was given another supporting actress Oscar nomination for her part in David Lynch’s the movie Wild at Heart in which she portrayed the mom of her biological child Dern’s character. A year later she received another nomination for her role in Rambling Rose which also starred her daughter.
“This movie that Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she brought Laura and I to the UK for a special screening and a party in our honor,” Ladd shared about the film Rambling Rose. “And she sat between us, grasping our hands, with tears, viewing our performance.”
The nineties also saw roles in humorous films Cemetery Club joining her again with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political comedy, starring John Travolta and Payne’s the movie Citizen Ruth where she acted as the mother of Dern once more. Those years also brought her TV award nominations for work on Dr Quinn, the show Grace Under Fire plus Touched by an Angel.
She continued to star with her daughter in dramatic comedies Daddy and Them, David Lynch’s Inland Empire, a surreal film and White’s dark comedy series the program Enlightened. She was also seen alongside Sandra Bullock, a star in the film 28 Days, Sir Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film plus Jennifer Lawrence in the film Joy.
Her more recent television parts consisted of Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon.
She additionally penned and oversaw the comedy the movie Mrs Munck which starred Diane Ladd and ex-husband actor Bruce Dern. “Bruce is a talented star,” she noted. “It was a privilege to guide him in a movie. Actually, I’m the only woman in recorded history to direct her ex-husband. I often joke: ‘I say ladies, should you desire retribution, guide your former spouse.’ Though I’m just teasing.”
She happened to be the third cousin of Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a major inspiration throughout my life”.
During 2018, Ladd was misdiagnosed with lung disease and informed she only had half a year left yet she recovered completely when her daughter moved her to a new hospital.
“If you can take your pain and avoid letting it accumulate like an injury, instead use it to explore, to clarify the journey for yourself and others, then you are winning,” Ladd said.
