LeBron James was aware his historic streak of scoring in double figures was threatened. At the decisive instant, though, it was not his focus.
The smart move meant distributing the basketball – so he did. Following that play, the unprecedented record was over.
James's astounding streak of over 1,200 straight NBA regular season outings scoring at least ten ended during a recent game, as the league's career points king was limited to eight points during the Los Angeles Lakers' close win against the Toronto Raptors. He made the game-winning assist, setting up Rui Hachimura to knock down a three-pointer to win the game.
“Zero,” James replied after being questioned regarding the conclusion of his run. “We won.”
He might have tried to secure the game – while also extending the streak – on the final possession, yet he opted to pass to Rui stationed in the corner. Hachimura sank it, with LeBron exulted immediately.
You have to play the game correctly. Make the right play,” James noted. That has always been how I operate. That is the way I was instructed the game. I've played that way for two decades.”
James is acutely aware of how many points he's scored at all times,” said Lakers coach the coach. He made the play like he’s done countless times.”
He returned to the game for the final time with 5:23 remaining, the outcome and the streak both hanging in the balance. He had only six points from 3 for 15 from the field by that point.
He scored with under two minutes remaining to knot the score but then missed a 14-footer with 1:01 left that would have pushed him to ten points.
He passed up another shot – even though he had a chance. A teammate passed him the ball with a few seconds left, but James decided to make the pass instead.
“The basketball gods, if you do it the proper way, they will reward you,” Redick added.
The record began over eighteen years ago. It stood as the greatest double-digit streak the league has ever seen: Michael Jordan previously held a streak of 866 consecutive games with 10+ points, Kareem recorded 787 such games, and Karl Malone recorded of 575 games.
“He’s such an unselfish player,” said teammate Jake LaRavia.
He simply plays the game of basketball. He could have shot but because of who he is on the court and just who he is as an individual, he executed the team play, dished to Hachimura and secured the game.”
Scoring in double figures had typically been a formality early in the final period. Over the course of the record, he had achieved the 10-point mark by the start of the fourth over twelve hundred times prior to Thursday.
Yet two of those rare single-digit games through three quarters had occurred in the last week: He recorded nine entering the final quarter versus the Mavericks last week, then had six before the fourth quarter versus the Suns earlier in the week.
LeBron was able to keep the streak alive in the Phoenix game. In the following contest, it concluded – and he celebrated all the same.
I only ever make the correct play. That comes naturally, no matter what,” James said. “You make the right play, the game gods consistently returning the favor.”
