Sir Humphrey Burton, a monumental figure in arts broadcasting, has died at the age of 94.
The revered director, who transformed classical music programming, passed away at home surrounded by his loved ones.

Born in Trowbridge in 1931, he established himself as a beloved figure who popularised classical music for a vast audience.
His tenure as the BBC's head of music and arts in the sixties and seventies was marked by critically praised work, including the programme The Golden Ring.
1978 saw him pioneer the Young Musician of the Year, a competition instrumental in discovering future stars including violinist Nicola Benedetti.
The news was met with an outpouring of tribute, with many citing his definitive role for generations of creators.
One prominent executive stated, “This is tragic news – but what a life, and what a legacy... A man so full of elegance, warmth, and brilliant anecdotes.”
An honorary society celebrated his work, declaring he had done more than most to reveal music's marvels and established a standard of excellence.
He worked closely with musical giants like Yehudi Menuhin and Leonard Bernstein, penning a biography of Bernstein.
His role as a presenter on a classical radio station further reinforced his status, with his unmistakable enthusiasm bringing music to new listeners.
His family remembered him was “deeply loved” and that his driving purpose of sharing classical music was “truly inspirational.”
Among his many achievements was helping to establish a television network and hosting the arts show Aquarius.
His honours comprised three from the British Academy and four Emmies. He was knighted in 2020 for services to classical music and the arts.
Reflecting in his memoir, he remarked on a perceived declining viewership for young musician contests and called for more innovation in music programming.
