The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl containing multiple personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate souls, each with their own fears and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic involves managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the girl one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have large blooms growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one standing could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
